How to Care for Your Sublimation Tumbler: Washing, Heat & Design Longevity

You just received your new sublimation tumbler — the colors are vivid, the design is crisp, and you want to keep it that way for years to come. The good news: sublimation tumblers are incredibly durable when cared for correctly. Below, we answer the most common questions we hear from customers so you can protect your investment and keep your tumbler looking like day one.

🚿 Hand-Washing vs. the Dishwasher

Always hand-wash your sublimation tumbler. This is the single most important rule. Dishwashers are harsh environments — the combination of high-pressure hot water jets, steam cycles, and alkaline detergents is aggressive enough to:

  • Lift or crack the polyester coating that bonds the sublimation ink to the tumbler surface
  • Cause visible color fade, especially in lighter tones and gradients
  • Delaminate specialty finishes such as glitter, holographic, or glow-in-the-dark coatings
  • Warp lids and straws that are not rated for high-heat cycles

How to hand-wash the right way:

  1. Use lukewarm water (not hot) and a small drop of mild dish soap.
  2. Clean the exterior gently with a soft cloth or sponge — never an abrasive scrubber or steel wool.
  3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  4. Dry immediately with a soft towel, then stand upright to air-dry completely before storing.

For our 32oz & 40oz Sublimation Glass Tumblers with Lid and Straw, pay extra attention when cleaning around the lid seal and straw opening where moisture tends to linger.

🌡️ Heat-Drying Precautions

Heat is the enemy of sublimation coatings after the initial press. During manufacturing, ink is fused to the coating at controlled temperatures — but repeated exposure to uncontrolled heat reverses this bond over time.

Avoid:

  • Placing tumblers in a dishwasher's heated dry cycle
  • Setting tumblers on or near stovetops, ovens, or space heaters
  • Leaving tumblers in a hot car on summer days for extended periods
  • Using a hair dryer or heat gun on the exterior for any reason

Safe drying practice: After hand-washing, pat dry with a lint-free cloth and let the tumbler air-dry at room temperature. This preserves both the coating and any specialty finishes on tumblers like our 40oz Glitter Holographic Stainless Tumbler and 40oz Glow in the Dark Stainless Tumbler.

🛡️ Coating Compatibility

Sublimation tumblers have a special polymer coating that allows the ink to bond to the metal or glass surface. Different tumbler styles have different coating chemistries, and each has its own compatibility considerations:

Tumbler Type Coating Notes Key Avoid
Standard stainless sublimation Clear poly coating over steel Dishwasher, abrasives
Glitter / holographic finish Specialty particle layer over base coat Soaking, dishwasher, scrubbing
Macaroon color tumblers Pre-colored base with poly top coat Harsh detergents, hot water
Glow-in-dark tumblers Phosphorescent layer beneath ink UV cleaners, bleach, dishwasher
Glass sublimation tumblers Thin polymer film on glass substrate Dishwasher, sudden temperature changes
Ombre / gradient tumblers Blended coating, ink-dense surface Abrasive cloths, prolonged soaking

🎨 Color Fade & Design Longevity

One of the most common questions in sublimation communities is: "Why is my design fading?" In nearly all cases, the culprit is one of the following:

  1. Dishwasher exposure — as covered above, this is the leading cause of premature fade.
  2. Abrasive cleaning materials — rough sponges and scrub pads scratch the coating and remove ink with it.
  3. Prolonged UV exposure — avoid leaving your tumbler on a sunny windowsill or outdoors for extended periods. While sublimation inks have reasonable UV resistance, sustained direct sunlight will eventually shift colors.
  4. Bleach or alcohol-based cleaners — these strip the polymer coating. Use only mild, pH-neutral dish soap.
  5. Soaking — do not submerge your tumbler for prolonged periods. A quick wash and rinse is all that's needed.

With proper hand-washing and gentle care, sublimation designs maintain excellent vibrancy through regular daily use.

📦 Storage Tips

  • Store upright with the lid off or loosely placed so the interior can breathe and moisture doesn't trap inside.
  • Avoid stacking tumblers nested inside each other — this can scratch the exterior coating over time.
  • Keep away from sharp objects in drawers or cabinets that could nick the surface.
  • Use a soft sleeve or pouch if traveling with your tumbler in a bag to prevent surface scratches.

🔧 Quick Troubleshooting

Issue Likely Cause What to Do
Design looks washed out or dull Dishwasher use or abrasive cleaning Switch to hand-washing only; avoid scrubbers
Colors look faded in one area Localized scrubbing or UV exposure Use a soft cloth only; store away from sunlight
Glitter flaking off Soaking, dishwasher, or harsh detergent Gentle wipe-down only with damp soft cloth
Coating feels tacky or peeling Heat damage or chemical cleaners Avoid high heat; use mild soap only
Interior smells or looks stained Moisture trapped from improper drying Dry thoroughly; store with lid off
Lid or straw discolored Dishwasher or hot water exposure Hand-wash lids separately in cool water
